Mercedes-Benz G-Class - Presentation of differential locks | W463

the g-class is regarded as one of the
best off-road vehicles
the reason it's outstanding off-road
capability when traveling through
difficult terrain in extreme cases only
one wheel has traction that is why the
g-class is equipped with three
electrically activated differential
locks when driving on normal roads the
locks are not engaged the differentials
perform the usual task the differentials
ensure that the wheels on one axle can
rotate at different speeds this is
especially important when cornering the
different wheel speeds are compensated
for and the drive torque is distributed
evenly the g-class has permanent
all-wheel drive the drive power from the
transfer box is divided evenly between
the front and rear axles
the middle differential in the transfer
box compensates for any speed
differences between the two drive axles
however the different wheel speeds can
become a disadvantage on an uneven
surface we will show you why by sending
the g-class through an off-road obstacle
course an artificial obstacle course
simulates an off-road situation with a
97 percent incline on an uneven surface
the drive power searches for the path of
least resistance as a result it only
drives the wheel without any traction
the wheel spins none of the other wheels
are driven and the vehicle does not move
forwards and this is precisely where the
differential locks come into play they
lock the differentials completely the
wheels can no longer turn independently
they all have exactly the same speed as
a result all of the wheels are driven
above all those which have traction the
differential locks are activated by
pressing a button and are always
activated in a specific sequence first
the transfer box then the rear axle and
finally the front axle
the driver must first press low-range in
order to be able to activate the
differential locks this activates the
off-road gear reduction when traversing
our off-road obstacle course the driver
only decides to lock the transfer box in
the rear axle
will that be enough the yellow control
light indicates the requests to activate
the corresponding lock is in progress
the red function control light shows the
corresponding differential is locked all
of the wheels are driven the g-class
easily masters the obstacle course
pressing a single button releases all of
the locks again namely by deactivating
the middle differential lock and the
transfer box drivers always guaranteed
whether on flat or hilly routes the
g-class comes through almost any
situation on its own.
