Compensation and Pension Exam Do’s and Don'ts

A Compensation and Pension Exam is ordered by the VA rater if they need additional medical evidence to support your VA Disability Claim. All compensation and pension exams are done by outside contractors now so you will be dealing with one of the major companies like QTC, VES or LHI for your exam.

Your job is to go into your C&P exam and answer questions the examiner has about your disability. The doctor's job is to examine you and send a report back to the VA. Here are a few Do’s and Don'ts for you to consider during the compensation and pension exam.

Don’t say you are having a great day if the doctor asks how are you doing.

Don’t offer information that you are not asked about.

Don’t be rude, you are there to do a job which is to give info and the doctor is there to collect it.

Do tell the truth, you are going to be nervous and the truth is complicated enough depending on what you are being evaluated for.

Do your research prior to your exam and review your DBQ so you have an idea of the types of questions he is going to be asking you. If you filed a claim for PTSD then you will be going to compensation and pension exam for PTSD. Make sure you are prepared to talk to the psychologist!

If you filed a claim for Sleep Apnea or Migraines you will be going to a regular medical doctor aka a compensation and pension exam for sleep apnea or migraines.

Do pay attention to what he is doing, is he using a goniometer on you to record measurements if you are in an orthopedic C&P exam.
