40th Anniversary of Women Police/Peace Officers in the RCMP

40 years ago, then RCMP Commissioner Maurice Nadon announced that the Force will start to accept women for training as police officers. Troop 17, consisting of 32 women from across the country, made history on September 16, 1974 as the first class of women to be sworn in as official regular members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

In celebration of this momentous occasion, the BC RCMP has created a short video, highlighting various female police or peace officers who are currently serving proudly in this province. The video also features Retired Commissioner Bev Busson, who was a part of the first female Troop 17 in 1974. Retired Commissioner Busson served as the Commanding Officer of the RCMP in British Columbia for 6 years prior to becoming the RCMP’s first female Commissioner in 2006.

Since Troop 17’s induction into the RCMP, women have made significant strides and contributions in all aspects of policing, serving in detachments or specialized units as police or peace officers, civilian members, public servants, municipal employees and volunteers. The female officers in the video represent a small fraction of the progress made over the last four decades.
