DIY: Aquascape EP.1
After numerous requests for me to show how I build my aqua scapes, and personally needing an extra rock to mount my corals to, I finally found time to make one.
I am sorry it has taken me so long to make this video. Work, travel and life tends to do that sometimes.
I order my dead rock from Bulk Reef Supply. The rock usually comes in big chunks like this one, but for this particular application that just will not work.
To break this chunk of rock into smaller pieces, I use a hammer, and a flat head screwdriver.
After yet another questionable stare from my neighbors and about 20 minutes later, I now have many pieces of smaller rock.
I take a clean piece of spare plexiglass from past projects and use that as my base.
I usually have some kind of sketch to go by, and specifically what corals I want to mount to the rock I am creating.
From the pieces I broke from the larger rock, I choose two of the bigger pieces for the base.
I use whatever super glue I have available, any glue at this point in the build will do since the rock isn’t live and won’t kill any good bacteria. In this build I am using different types of Gorilla Glue GEL.
I take one of the two base rock pieces and glue it to the other.
I then spread a hefty glob of glue in-between the cracks.
Then I take a piece of scrap paper and press the glue into the cracks.
Once all the glue has dried, I then take a smaller piece of rock and glue it to one end of the base rock to create an overhang.
I don’t want to sit here all night and hold the overhang while the glue cures so I place another piece of small rock and prop up the rock I glued.
Time for a break. The great thing about using the plexiglass as a base, it is easily slideable to move out of the way and work on later.
This is what it looks like after the glue has dried.
I then lay down more huge globs to ensure a solid connection.
I will repeat this process until the I am satisfied with the final shape of the rock.
