“This is a wonderful place,” I say as I walk into my lab. And it truly is. Here, in a sense, the life is arrested at this stage.
Behind this door is one of the most extraordinary rooms in medicine, and it is freezing cold. For over three decades, hundreds of eggs, sperm, and embryos have been frozen and kept here in liquid nitrogen. Each one paused in time, held safely, waiting. Some belong to women who chose to protect their fertility for later. Some are embryos already formed, resting until their family is ready for them.

I want to be clear about something, because it matters. These are not babies in storage. What is frozen here is potential, the earliest beginning of a life that will only ever become a child inside its mother. We are not keeping babies cold. We are keeping hope safe. And every one belongs to someone, a specific couple, a specific dream, each labelled, watched, and protected, because each is a family’s future paused until the right moment.

A generation ago, this was impossible. Today, a woman can press pause on time itself and choose her moment to become a mother. After three decades doing this work, it still amazes me, and I enjoy it every single day.
