A Hidden Life - Church Painter Scene

My favorite scene from the movie.

I took it as Malick taking a look at himself as an artist. Artists are storytellers, and at the heart of all stories is conflict. He looks at these conflicts and wonders if he is worthy to be the one to tell it, having never truly suffered like the people themselves actually did.

It is a more pessimistic take on storytelling, but certainly one we should consider. Is a storyteller ever really worthy of another's story?
