GM Knew the Ignition Switch Would Kill People. They Fixed It for 57 Cents

For over a decade, GM sold cars with a defective ignition switch. The switch would cut engine power mid-drive — disabling airbags, power steering, brakes. Engineers identified the problem in 2001. The fix cost 57 cents per car. GM chose not to implement it. Between 2003 and 2014, the defect caused hundreds of crashes. At least 124 people died. When the story broke in 2014, GM finally recalled 2.6 million vehicles. Internal documents revealed engineers knew for years. A 57-cent part. Hundreds of lives. GM made their choice. The same choice Ford made with the Pinto — decades earlier.
