Billy The Kid Tribute from Young Guns & Young Guns II

July 14th was 136 years since Billy was supposedly killed.

My tribute to Billy The Kid from the Young Guns films...as movies they were pretty inaccurate but I do think they portrayed his personality as described by his friends back then as funny, quick witted, impulsive, a loyal friend & a person beloved by the surrounding communities who hid & protected him from the law. I had a lot of trouble fitting all the important parts of his story into this video and some are missing but I managed to include,

1. The murder of his boss John Tunstall (somewhat of a father to him) by hitmen hired by the local sheriff who was being paid off by Tunstall's business rivals.

2. The deputisation of Billy & his friends by the justice of the peace to bring in Tunstall's murderers.

3. Tunstall's funeral - actually Billy missed the funeral after trying to arrest the murderers he was sent after he was in turn arrested and they kept him locked up just long enough to miss the funeral. (assholes)

4. The Battle of Lincoln, a 5 day siege where Billy & the regulators (no longer deputised & seen as outlaws) were holed up in McSweens house to protect him, (McSween was Tunstall's business partner). This was when the Sheriff (who was still taking money & working for the rival Murphy-Dolan faction) was killed & Billy was blamed even thought there were 16 bullet wounds & no one could say who or which shot killed him. (I didn't include this in the video as YG portrays Billy as the sole shooter which is completely incorrect.)

5. His escape & life on the run with his gang, he was protected & helped my most mexican families in the area who adored him as he could speak fluent Spanish, loved their food & music & integrated into their communities.

6. His meeting & deal with governor Lew Wallace who promised him a pardon from the crime of killing the Lincoln sheriff if he would testify against his enemies in court on the murder of McSweens lawyer that he witnessed...he was FAKE arrested to protect him from being killed before the court case (kind of like an old day 'Witness Protection')

7. After Billy testified & did everything that was asked of him Governor Lew Wallace went back on his promise to Billy and did not give him his pardon, instead he was sentenced to hang. 50 people were indicted of crimes & murder at this time & yet Billy was the only one to be convicted of a crime!!! He wrote a letter to the Governor saying, 'I have done everything I promised and you have done nothing you promised'....

8. Billy escaped jail & was hunted down & caught at Stinking Springs by his old acquaintance, Pat Garrett (Now sheriff...I'm not sure they were friends but they knew each other from Billy gambling at Pats bar in Fort Sumner)

9. His detention in Lincoln waiting to hang...he somehow got hold of a gun & shot his guard James Bell (He told people after that he was really sorry that he did that because he liked Bell a lot but he felt forced into the situation) & he shot Bob Ollinger with pleasure as Ollinger was a cruel man who'd also been involved with murders with the rival gang Murphy-Dolan faction. (Hello Bob was the last thing Billy ever said to him before he shot him with his own shot gun).

Billy was mostly a cattle/horse rustler...he got a bad rap as a killer of 21+ men in the tabloids & dime novels etc...infact he prob killed 4-8 people in his life...no different from a lot of men at the time when the country had just come out of the civil war & many men had guns, were homeless, jobless & were numbed by death & war. Several of the sheriffs, regulators, rival faction members & even Pat Garrett had murdered people too but they never had to account for it...debate away.
