The Shushtar Historical Hydraulic System in Iran is an ancient masterpiece of engineering. Initiated in the 5th century BCE under Darius the Great and expanded during the Sassanid era, this UNESCO World Heritage complex uses 13 interconnected dams, canals, tunnels, and watermills to sustainably manage water for irrigation and energy.
