For nearly 20 years, Bernie’s Coffee in Noe Valley has been more than a place to grab espresso. It has been a neighborhood living room — a place where people swap stories, check in on each other, discover books, name drinks by accident, and feel seen. The Infatuation's review of Bernie's calls it "the gold standard of neighborhood coffee shops".

In this special episode of Navigating, Anita visits Bernie’s Coffee in San Francisco to meet Bernie herself and hear what it takes to keep a beloved community space alive in a city that has changed dramatically since the pandemic, also a time Bernie's patrons helped raised over $20,000 to help her keep the shop alive.

Bernie talks about the “Iced Bernie,” her longtime customers, the bookstore collaboration inside the shop, the decline in foot traffic, the loneliness of running a small business alone, and why coffee shops still matter in an age of delivery apps, isolation, and disappearing third places.
