NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has captured an incredible first-anniversary image that reveals the birth of stars in a way we've never seen before. The image showcases the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, the closest region to Earth where stars are forming. The image shows jets shooting out from young stars, crisscrossing space and colliding with the surrounding interstellar gas. These interactions create a stunning display of molecular hydrogen, portrayed in vibrant red hues. Additionally, some stars exhibit the distinct shadow of a circumstellar disk, indicating the potential for future planetary systems to develop.

The top half of the image is dominated by striking dual opposing jets emanating from young stars, set against a darker background. Towards the bottom section's centre is a captivating pale yellow structure resembling a cave. Its top portion is tilted slightly to the right, with a brilliant star at its centre. As we follow the dust of the cave structure towards the eight o'clock position, it gradually becomes more wispy. Above the arched top of the cave, three groups of stars with diffraction spikes are arranged in a captivating pattern. A dark cloud resides at the arch's highest point, with one streamer curling down the right side. The central region of the dark cloud appears pinched, with light emerging in a triangular shape above and below the pinch, revealing the presence of a star within. The largest jets of red material originate from this dark cloud, presenting a rugged, cliff-like structure that emits a brighter glow at its edges. Towards the top centre of the image, another star showcases a larger, vertically pinched dark shadow. A more indistinct and wispy region can be observed to the left of this star.

Webb's image gives us a glimpse of approximately 50 young stars, all with masses similar to or smaller than our Sun. The darkest areas in the image represent the densest regions, where thick dust cocoons envelop protostars that are still forming. The image is dominated by massive bipolar jets of molecular hydrogen, depicted in red, which stretch horizontally across the upper third and vertically on the right side. These jets occur when a star breaks through its birth envelope of cosmic dust, propelling opposing streams of material into space, reminiscent of a newborn stretching her arms out for the first time. In contrast, the star S1 has carved out a luminous dust cave in the lower half of the image. It stands out as the only star significantly more massive than our Sun.
Klaus Pontoppidan, the Webb project scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, expressed his excitement about the image, stating that it allows us to witness a fleeting phase in the life cycle of stars with unprecedented clarity. He highlighted the similarity to a phase our own Sun experienced long ago and emphasized the significance of having the technology to witness the beginning of another star's story. Some stars within the image exhibit shadows that indicate the presence of protoplanetary disks, the potential building blocks of future planetary systems.
