If you have signed as a witness, you are not liable to repay the loan. But, if you have signed as Guarantor, you are bound by liability to repay the loan even if the principal borrower is available for recovery or not

As long as you are not a co applicant or a Guarantor the bank cannot do anything. If you have not taken a loan or stood guarantee for loan granted to someone the bank cannot ask you to pay.
