Can You Steal a Car Without the Key Fob? This Might Surprise You

We're asking the question: Can your car be stolen if you leave it running when you run into the store just because you have the key fob?

This episode of TestDrive is a deep look at how key fob technology works and how some might not fully understand the consequences of relying on it. We've set up a controlled test to look for one specific thing: can a car be stolen if the key fob is taken out after the engine has been running? In order to get the best results we wanted to focus specifically on this question, so we aren't looking at whether or not the car can be locked from the outside while it's running, and this doesn't apply to remote starting as every vehicle we've tested requires the key fob to be inside the vehicle before the drive mode will activate.

The scenario is simple, you need to run into the corner store to pick up a loaf of bread and want to leave the car running, maybe you have a pet in the backseat, or you're super irresponsible and have a child in the back. Whatever the reason is, our tests are all the same. The car is started normally from the driver's seat with the fob, the door is shut and the driver leaves the car, and the key fob is given to someone approximately 4m from the car. The driver then returns to the car to see if the vehicle can be put in drive and driven off without the key fob.

Our testing is broken down into 3 segments. Segment one deals with the individual auto manufacturers/brands we had the chance to test over the past 4 months using one vehicle to demonstrate for the entire brand. You can skip ahead to each manufacturer we tested by clicking the timecode below:

00:17 FCA/Chrysler - Vehicle tested: 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon
00:49 Kia - Vehicle tested: 2020 Kia Sorento SX V6
01:27 Ford Motor Company - Vehicle tested: 2020 Lincoln Aviator Reserve
02:03 Mercedes-Benz - Vehicle tested: 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 4matic
02:27 Mitsubishi Motors - Vehicle tested: 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV GT S-AWC
02:51 Nissan/Infiniti - Vehicle tested: 2020 Nissan Titan Pro-4X Luxury
03:17 Volvo Cars - Vehicle tested: 2020 Volvo XC90 T8 R-Design PHEV
03:41 Volkswagen - Vehicle tested: 2020 Volkswagen Passat Execline

Segment two is a recap of what we've gone over including the requirements for our testing that have been discussed here in the comments. At this point we also discuss how we only had access to a certain number of vehicles and hope to get the other manufacturers sold here in Canada over the next few months in a follow up video.

Segment three is the extra footage we captured over the months of other vehicles from the same auto groups/manufacturers that behaved the same way as the vehicles in the first segment did. Since we recorded footage for almost every car we drove we wanted to include the rest of the footage to show our work. You can skip ahead to the specific cars we tested by clicking these timecodes:

07:19 2020 Lincoln Corsair Reserve AWD
07:46 2020 Ford Fusion Titanium Plug-in Hybrid
08:16 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Toruing
08:36 2020 RAM 1500 Rebel EcoDiesel
09:01 2020 Infiniti QX50 Sensory AWD
09:20 2021 Kia Seltos EX

Stay tuned for part 2 coming later on as we test other automotive manufacturers to see if you can steal a car without the key fob!
