The 2019 Winnebago Travato 59G is one of America's top selling class B camper vans… but it could be better?

The Travato 59G was the first class b camper van built on the Ram Promaster chassis back in 2014. It was an immediate hit and sales haven't slowed since. There are good reasons why people like the 59G: it's price. The van I reviewed was advertised at $83k and included 200 watts of solar, a 1000w inverter, rooftop air conditioning, a 2.8kw gas generator, cold water filtration system and a large 6.7 cu. Ft. compressor refrigerator. Some important available options are heated holding tanks, bike and luggage racks, a movable ladder and a rear screen door.

The 59G ditches the tried and true rear sofa bed configuration that's so popular here in North America for the tried and true front lounge with permanent bed configuration that's the standard in Europe. The front lounge features a table that flips down to get out of the way and a large swing out extension. With the extension the table is large enough to accommodate five people. The two cab seats swing around and the jump seat accommodates two. The water tank is internal and can be used as a 5th seat. Speaking of seating the jump seat is not comfortable. The back is too vertical and the cushions are thin. There are no 3-point seatbelts for passengers sitting on the jump seat. The overhead cabinet above the lounge sits low and taller passengers will hit their head on it when seated. The cushions to the jump seat are not attached to the frame and will fly about the cabin are you're driving down the road.

The galley is mid-van and features Corian counters, a gas burner, a small microwave and a large compressor refrigerator. You can't use the microwave off batteries because you only have a 1,000 watt inverter. Speaking of power systems I'm worried that there isn't enough solar or battery capacity to run the large compressor refrigerator and supply ample power for all your other electrical needs. The 59G comes standard with 2 lead acid batteries. Lithium is available but only on the GL version which is a $30k option.

The bedroom is in the rear and features a smallish flip down bed. The bed is plenty long enough to sleep a taller person but isn't wide enough to comfortably sleep 2. That's because the 59G's bathroom shares the width of the rear part of the van with the bedroom. It's a large bathroom but it needs a bilge pump to pump the water out of the shower to the grey water holding tank. You have to remember to turn that on and it's noisy. When the bed is flipped up there's a good amount of pass-thru and a small garage for storing bulky items.

The Travato 59G is a good van that comes in at a great price but you have to be okay with some serious compromises to get that price. The first is the quality of its construction. It does use stick framing and staples for it's cabinet construction and it only comes with a 1 year warranty. Because of these things I can't really recommend it. You can get a comparable Ram Promaster based camper van for about the same price from Roadtrek that offers you a 6 year warranty. Or pay a bit more and get a Pleasureway Lexor with a 5 year warranty and quality that is light years ahead.
