TP-LINK TL-WR710N Portable Handheld Router Network Access Point / Client Review
Buy it on Amazon - http://goo.gl/1QWuEB (affiliate link)
TP Link makes a few of these very useful portable routers. This model is their newest one.
It's a small and light weight router that can easily fit in a bag for use when you need to establish a network in a pinch. By default it operates as a standardcable/DSL router and wireless access point but it also has a number of other modes:
1. Router mode as described above
2. Wireless client mode to bridge ethernet only devices to a wireless network
3. Wireless access point mode to establish a new wireless network on the spot
4. Wireless repeater mode to extend an existing wireless network
5. WISP (wireless ISP) mode for connecting to wireless ISP (note this is different from Verizon or AT&T)
The device features two ethernet ports that can both be used when in wireless client mode, allowing two wired devices to bridge to the wireless network. When in router mode one port is for the WAN the other for the LAN.
It also has an onboard USB port that can provide 1 amp of power to charge a cell phone. The USB port also supports storage devices which can be shared over a local area network to connected computers. It's not very secure in that a guest account is hard coded into the device and can't be removed. Account access cannot be set on a folder by folder basis either, so I wouldn't recommend this for mission critical files.
It also has an onboard DLNA server that I found to be problematic - it doesn't always announce itself to the network and when it does my smart television couldn't play any of the video files I had on the flash drive. Those same movie files played on the same television when they were on another DLNA device.
Gripes aside with the USB functionality this is a very versatile networking tool with a great 2 year warranty behind it. I recommend it highly.
