Nirvana - Marigold (1996)

A sort of more positive story regarding Kurt's unsuccessful suicide via overdose in Rome, Italy during the In Utero tour, he is confronted by Courtney who tells him that if he doesn't get his act together, she'll leave him and take Frances with her. So, Kurt cuts the tour short, much to the fans' disappointment, checks into Exodus Recovery Center in Los Angeles for a year and a half. After a successful detox program, Kurt decides to take his newfound sobriety to another level, and becomes a Buddhist monk, and rarely leaves his home other than to go grocery shopping and the occasional outing with his wife and daughter. Courtney, Dave, and Krist all mention in interviews that Kurt is taking an "oath of silence" as part of his newfound sobriety and spirituality, but it is speculated that these claims were all made up to keep any future projects under wraps.
During Nirvana's dormancy, Dave Grohl decides to officially record some demos for a solo project he calls Foo Fighters, while also writing newer material, at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, Washington with producer Barrett Jones. He completes these new songs and rewritten older songs on July 4th, 1995. (some of which would end up making it onto this album). Rumors begin to circulate that Dave and Krist Novoselic are recording new material for Nirvana, but Krist and Dave deny these in interviews.

It's found out later on that from August of 1995 until January of 96, the band was recording what would become their long awaited fourth album, Marigold. The album was recorded by the band and Jack Endino (who also engineered the album), once again at Pachyderm in Cannon Falls, MI. Kurt, being encouraged by David Bowie's approval, got around to recording a studio version of The Man Who Sold The World (I used the MTV live and loud version, which was the closest I could find to what I think the track would sound like in a studio). Dave would assume lead vocals on songs like Big Me, and the titular Marigold track. Kurt thought it best to sing on Dave's song Alone Easy Target. The album brings a refreshing mix of the polished studio sound of Nevermind, and the barebones gut-wrenching sound of In Utero with "Oh The Guilt" and "Reverb Experiment".
