"People often ask us if they can vertically lift a load with a Dutton-Lainson pulling winch, but the answer is right there in the name.

While many call non-brake hand operated winches intended for pulling applications hand, manual, or ratchet winches, we call them pulling winches to emphasize that we do not recommend using them in vertical lifting applications.

While it is possible for these winches to lift a load and hold it in place when you let go of the handle, you're leaving it and the winch in a very precarious position. If there is a load on the pulling winch and you lose control of the handle when the ratchet pawl is disengaged from the drive shaft gears, the handle will violently spin and your load will freefall to the ground, which could seriously damage you, your load, and the people around you.

Because of the potential dangers, a pulling winch should never be used to vertically lift or lower a load. Instead, you should use a winch with an automatic brake built into it, such as a brake winch, a worm gear winch, or an electric winch without a clutch lever. There aren't any levers to mess with on these types of winches, and they are designed with vertical lifting applications in mind.
