3M™ Tech Tips: Damaged Panel Repair Process Episode 8: Sand Glaze
Tom Cornelius, 3M Application Engineer, goes through the 3M Standard Operating Procedure detailing how to perform a panel repair on a large, damaged area. In the eight episode Tom shows how to sand the glaze we applied in the last video.
Important notes
Always wear proper PPE: Safety glasses, protective gloves, respirator and anything else required for the job. This video is intended for a professional setting such as a body shop or paint shop. Make sure to check OEM recommendations for all adhesives to confirm you’re using the correct product for the job.
Apply dry guide coat (00:48)
Always use dry guide coat when sanding glaze.
First sanding step (00:55)
Start with 150 grit. We strongly recommend using a dust extraction system and a net abrasive.
Reapply dry guide coat and block sand (01:49)
We recommend 180 grit.

There are of course many factors and variables that can affect an individual repair, so the technician and repair facility need to evaluate each specific application and repair process, including relevant vehicle, part and OEM guidelines, and determine what is appropriate for that repair.
