The Tragically Short Life of Dana Plato, Former Child Star
Did you know that former child star Dana Plato died tragically young after living a life of torment, or did you assume that her life had been much more glamorous? Dana Plato was a former child star that rose to superstardom due to her tenure alongside fellow child star Gary Coleman on the hit 1978 sitcom Diff’rent Strokes. Both Dana and Gary would develop substance abuse habits behind the scenes of the show, with Dana suffering her first drug overdose at the age of 14.

In 1984, Dana was let go from Diff’rent Strokes after becoming pregnant. She would subsequently return for the show’s final season, though the former child star would have a hard time making a name for herself outside of the series once it came to an end. By the end of the 1980s, Dana’s career in the entertainment industry was essentially over. Not only that, but her husband had left her and gotten custody of their son due to Dana’s continued drug abuse.
A day before Dana’s death, she appeared on The Howard Stern Show, claiming that she was 10 years sober after a period of drug rehabilitation in the early 1990s. Howard and his callers were skeptical, and they aggressively ribbed the actress about her controversial past. The next day, Dana committed suicide.
