1. Night
1915

The entire night frantic and queasy,
I dreamt of the sun.
No sound or whisper was around me,
All was pale, night and moon.

I dreamt of the sun's gold.
Yearned for its happy miracle.
I wanted to love its clever whisper.
Its resplendent, incandescent words...

But all was pale and dull around me,
No words were there, and there was no sun...

2. Insomnia
1919

Stomp, stomp, stomp in the night,
Horses boot and kick their hooves,
They stomp their hooves on the ground,
Endless is the night, unknown is the course.

Horses go forth and move on,
Here, there, they stomp their hooves,
Their hooves are pounding my temples now.
Precarious world, perishing and doom!

3. Anxiety
1928

I dread the midnight hour, just like a necromancer,
When the moon rises from the grave, and even the wind dies.
In that moment, if I am awake, I am struck with horror,
That Baudelaire will soon arrive, and Edgar Poe will appear,
That the old Verlaine will come, and with his faun-like voice
Sing of autumn, of sorrow, of night lantern, of acacia.
And the athwart rustling poplar tree will turn into Heine again,
And the moon above will again leaf through my cheerless quatrains.
