Pakistan. Punjabi nationalism in Pakistan largely emerged in the 1980s due to the emergence of the Saraiki language movement that looked to separate the Saraiki-speaking areas of the Punjab from the rest of the province. Since 1947, Punjabis have been at the forefront of promoting Pakistani nationhood in the name of Pakistaniyat & Islami bhaichara (brotherhood). That's a reason why Punjabis never developed a kind of nationalism and national pride for their nation the way other groups in Pakistan like Sindhis, Baloch, Pashtun and Muhajirs developed in the last seven decades. When Pakistan became independent in 1947, Punjabis were the most affected from the partition of their land by the British colonial rulers. Over 2 million Punjabis died and nearly 15 million were displaced during the partition riots. Horrors of partition continued for the next six months after the independence. As a result of this partition, Punjab was divided into West Punjab and East Punjab. The western Punjab, that became part of Pakistan, was completely cleansed from its Hindu & Sikh minorities while Eastern Punjab, which became part of India, was ethnically cleansed from its Muslim minority.
