Tips | Eco Printing Reveal and Results using Iron, Heat Press, Oven & Stove Top | Ideas
Tips and reveal about eco printing, also known as eco dying or boiled paper.
Overview of the different ways I used to eco print in 2018 using both in water and/or steam techniques using the stove top, oven, heat press and household iron. Includes commentary and results.
Cooking Details:
For "in water" on the stove or in the oven, the bundles are submerged in water. There needs to be weight on top to keep them submerged in water. I use a rock or ceramic tile. For the oven, I will boil some water on the stove to add to the pan once I put the pan/bundle on the oven rack. For the stove top, I just let the water come to a boil and insert the bundle.
In the oven I bake at 350 degrees for about two hours. The stove top bundle is cooked at more of a simmer for the same length of time. Both methods are covered. The pot has a lid and the oven pan has aluminum foil.
For the "steam" method - on the stove or in the oven, I place something on the bottom of the pot/pan, for example a grate, rocks, wood, ceramic tile or something that can handle the heat and water. Then the bundle is set on top and water is put in the bottom, coming just shy of the bundle's base. Pot/pan has a cover, same as for the "in water" method. There doesn't need to be any weight on top since they are not in the water. In all cases, water needs to be checked to be sure noting goes dry.
Let the bundle cool a bit and take layers apart, gently. I prefer to rinse my pages under a gentle stream of water. Paper can tear, so need to be careful. It's good to have some towels, cardboard, etc on hand to lay the pages on for drying.
At the 43 minute mark I go into detail on the process aspect and how to alum paper.
