The Broad Autism Phenotype in Parents of a Child with Autism and the General Population

Dr. Noah Sasson, Assistant Professor of Psychological Sciences at UT Dallas, presents “The Broad Autism Phenotype in Parents of a Child with Autism and the General Population.”

This talk summarizes recent work completed in collaboration with colleagues at UNC-Chapel Hill on the Broad Autism Phenotype (BAP), a term referring to mild characteristics of autism that are disproportionately prevalent in first degree relatives of individuals with autism. The talk begins by reviewing historical conceptualizations of the BAP, and then transitions into more recent methods developed for classifying and measuring it. The bulk of the talk focuses on the process by which the Broad Autism Phenotype Questionnaire was validated, how we have used it to estimate prevalence rates of the BAP in parents of children with autism and the general population, and the ways in which the BAP in parents is associated with autism symptoms in children. Finally, the talk concludes with a discussion of our most recent findings exploring agreement between self-report and informant-report of the BAP and its implications for accurate measurement.
