Printers do not read the physical level of ink inside of ink cartridges. It gets that information from the page counter stored on the chip. For the cartridges to read full after use the chips have to be reset. However, the cartridges for the 7820 and 7840 have chips that do not reset. This video shows how to replace the one time use chips.
