La Festa Velata|The Veiled Party - EHC No. 44

So I composed this a slow oboe concerto aria-style, to bring the Carnival of Venice through a veiled perspective. People picture masks and laughter, gondolas and light but that gaiety is only a surface. Beneath the ribbons and confetti there are darker currents: the plague mask’s hollow stare, the anonymity that turns revelers into shadows, the sudden opportunity for theft, vandalism, and whispered transgressions. My music leans toward that shadowed seam where beauty and menace breathe together, and the carnival’s true face slips behind its own disguise...

The piece itself is neither dark nor sorrowful, or even joyful. thus, to my ear it is beautifully veiled, a shimmer between light and shadow. I hope you enjoy the music...
