Linux exposes kernel internals in two key ways: procfs and sysctl.

procfs (/proc) is mainly for observability — live views into process and network state, like interface statistics, routing tables, and socket information.

sysctl is for control — safely tuning kernel behavior such as TCP buffers, timeouts, and forwarding rules, typically via /proc/sys or the sysctl command.
