2 are dead, 7 injured in New Jersey apartment building fire

Two people in New Jersey were killed when a large fire destroyed an apartment building early Sunday morning.

Fire crews in Camden say when they arrived they saw people jumping from third-story windows.

At least seven people were hurt.

Firefighters were able to rescue a number of people on ladders.

The fire chief said his crew worked hard to rescue people.

"We had numerous rescues here,” said Chief Michael Harper. “Just talking to the guys that were first due here, you know they were dragging people out from the front, from the back. Then we had people jumping out of windows. They rescued some people via ladders. So, it was a hard nights work for the men and women of the Camden Fire Department. They did an excellent job."

Another fire broke out just a few blocks away, making things more challenging for fire crews.

The Red Cross is now helping about 20-to-30 people who were displaced because of the fire.
