'Ndrangheta Bosses - Giuseppe Barbaro - The Vanishing Boss

Giuseppe Barbaro, "lu sparitu"
There are many Mafia families in Platì, and many of their members are fugitives. But only one of them was able to earn the nickname "lu sparitu." It is Giuseppe Barbaro, who has been a fugitive for 14-years and has still been able to run an unparalleled empire that appears to have no boundaries.
Talking about Giuseppe Barbaro, known in the milieu as "lu sparitu," is by no means easy. The powerful boss of the Barbaro cosca or gang, in fact, is just one of the members of a large ‘Ndrangheta family that has its roots in the late 19th century and that today, through an intricate family tree characterized by often identical names, surnames and nicknames, still holds power in Calabria and beyond.
A power gained and maintained mainly through kidnappings, which between the 1970s and 1990s terrorized anyone who possessed enough money to pay a ransom. The media referred to it as the Anonima Sequestri (which translates to Anonymous Kidnappings), but in reality the Barbato clan had its hands in several businesses and the kidnappings were just a way to make a quick buck which allowed them to build initial capital for other ventures. In fact, the dirty money could then be reinvested in drugs, weapons and contracts, in Italy and abroad.
The Barbaro 'ndrina is fierce, as fierce as and perhaps more so than the others: when it is time to go into action, they have no qualms about using heavy weapons, such as machine guns, Uzi, Skorpion, shotguns and assault rifles. Their goal is money, power, and little concern if someone gets killed.
Giuseppe Barbaro rises to power in the ‘Ndrangheta cosca upon his father's arrest and for long years, until his arrest, he will be the undisputed top dog of Platì.
Giuseppe Barbaro "lu sparitu": from boss to superwanted.
It all began as far back as January 29, 1873, when Francesco Barbaro was born in Platì, a tiny village on the slopes of Aspromonte, the founder of the ‘Ndrangheta clan that has been talked about. A ‘Ndrangheta clan united by unbreakable blood ties, which prevented the family from being destroyed by internal feuds, as often happens in the Sicilian Mafia.
From Francesco Barbaro's 10 sons, in fact, descended the three branches of the family and the eight 'Ndrine that would manage all the business in Platì in the years that followed, extending their reach into northern Italy and even Australia. Giuseppe Barbaro belongs to the branch of the family nicknamed "castani," being the son of another Francesco Barbaro, born in 1927 and nicknamed, precisely, Ciccio U'castanu.
Known as the king of kidnappings, Francesco Barbaro was finally arrested in 1989, leaving Giuseppe Barbaro in charge, who despite his most wanted status, held the power of the Barbaro clan until his 2001 arrest.
Involvement of Giuseppe Barbaro in the Anonima Sequestri.
As many as 17 high-profile kidnappings are attributed to the Barbaro clan, some of which held headlines in the evening news for many months. Indeed, characteristic of kidnappings by Calabrian crime syndicates is that the hostages remain in captivity for a long time, some of them held captive for up to years.
Some of these kidnappings have gone unpunished, although investigators are well aware that the Barbaro family was involved in these crimes. Such as in the case of the kidnapping of Alessandra Sgarella, the Milanese businesswoman kidnapped in Milan on Dec. 11, 1997, and freed on Sept. 4 of the following year after 266 days of captivity. The leading role in freeing her is precisely attributed to Giuseppe Barbaro, who appears to have been the go-between for the complex and controversial negotiations between the kidnappers, the family and the investigators. Indeed, suspicions, fueled from the outset by the media because of the strange manner of the businesswoman's release, focus on the hypothesis that Sgarella was released in exchange for judicial benefits for the boss and members of the Barbaro clan.
What is certain, however, is that Giuseppe Barbaro was involved in the trial for the kidnapping of Giuseppe Ferrarini, the first kidnapping to take place in Milanese territory in 1987, which earned the 'ndrina nearly a billion liras. Domenico Papalia, head of the 'ndrina Barbaro, and Gorizian Arturo Kravos were also convicted for this kidnapping
Giuseppe Barbaro's arrest: the underground passages of Platì
Giuseppe Barbaro's criminal career came to an abrupt end on December 10, 2001, when he was arrested with his wife, who had just brought him coffee, in a bunker hidden 50 feet below the family home.
Law enforcement officials arrived in Platì thanks to the revelations of one of the few 'ndrangheta turncoats, who revealed Giuseppe Barbaro's hideout, but capturing the super fugitive is not easy. The fear of revenge from the ‘Ndranghta, prevents citizens from cooperating with the police, so much so that the same officers engaged in the operation will report that they had to "force"
