Going with the Floe. As ice caps melt, Russian scientists aim to keep Arctic research afloat

There’s not much life on the 80th parallel north, where Russian researchers from the experimental ‘Transarktika-2019’ expedition are heading. They are tasked with reviving drifting polar stations that became too risky when rising temperatures started causing the ice caps to melt. Researchers used to work on the ice for months and sometimes years at a time without a support vessel nearby, but now they plan to wedge their ship into an ice floe and ‘go with it’, collecting vital data from the Arctic region. RTD joins the voyage to learn about the future of Arctic research amid concerns about our warming climate.
