What could you wear in Tudor England? #tudor #history #shorts

In Tudor England, what you wore told the world who you were.

Under sumptuary laws enforced after 1485 by Henry VII, clothing was tightly regulated by social rank.

The Nobility
Only the royal family and high nobles could wear cloth of gold, purple silk, ermine, and heavily jeweled garments. Rich velvets, satins, damasks, and furs signaled proximity to power.

The Gentry
Knights, squires, and wealthy landowners dressed well — but with limits. Fine wool, silk trims, velvet sleeves, and modest fur linings were allowed, but extravagant colors and royal fabrics were forbidden.

Commoners
Most people wore practical clothing made from wool or linen in muted tones like brown, grey, and russet. Bright dyes and decorative elements were rare and often illegal.
