Eye Makeup Tutorial | Good vs. Bad Eye Makeup

We all want big, beautiful eyes, but the secret to a successful eye makeup routine is in the small details. So many girls struggle to correctly apply their mascara, eyeliner, and eyeshadow, but it doesn’t have to be that way. I want to share my absolute best eye makeup tips and tricks so that you can have the perfect eye makeup every time and avoid the embarrassing failures which are so easy to do.

Here is a step by step process contrasting the correct way to do your eye makeup vs. the incorrect way to do your eye makeup.

How to apply your eyeshadow foundation:
• Start with a very neutral color of eye shadow and put the eye shadow all over your eyelid to lay the foundation for your eye makeup.

How NOT to apply your eyeshadow foundation:
• Start with a foundational eyeshadow color that is too dark.

How to apply eyeshadow under your eye
• Build a couple colors in the eyeshadow you use beneath your eye. Start with the same neutral color of eye shadow as your foundation and bring it in around the corner of your eye.
• After your have applied the darkest shade of eyeshadow you will be using (see next step) feather this same color beneath the outside corner of your eye and attach the color to the same color in the corner of your eye.

How NOT to apply eyeshadow under your eye
• Throw some darker eye makeup beneath your eye, not paying close attention to where it goes. Using a color darker than you started with, and letting it get too broad creates a dark eye look that is not desirable.

How to apply eyeshadow to the corner of your eye:
• Move to a slightly darker color od eyeshadow (I used one called “smog”) Put it just in the corner, and blend it inwards, upwards, and outward
• I like to use some shimmery eye shadow on the inside corner of my eyelid, sweeping it across and below the corner of my eye, using my forefinger as an applicator.
• Major Tip: be very careful not to pass the invisible line from the end of your eyebrow to the corner of your eye

How NOT to apply eyeshadow to the corner of your eye:
• Once again, be careful not to select a color of eyeshadow that is too dark. If you do this and also blend it in too far to the middle, it makes your eye makeup pop in a bad way.
• Using straight white eyeshadow on the inside corner of your eyelid when you have selected eye shadow colors that are too dark on the outside of your eyelid only emphasizes the bad color selection.

How to apply eyeliner:
• Eyeliner: I take extra care to bring the eyeliner up and uplift everything. The correct way to apply the eyeliner is to start in the middle and bring it out creating a wing that is lifting towards your eyebrow and then inch the eyeliner in to your eye’s water line, feathering it into the corner. The eyeliner at the inner corner of your eye should be the thinnest and slowly the eyeliner should get thicker as it moves outward.

How NOT to apply eyeliner:
• I brought my eyeliner wing straight out instead of bringing it up. This looks pretty bad

How to apply mascara:
• Make sure to really work the product into the lashes and angle them outwards.
How NOT to apply mascara:
• Do not let the mascara brush touch your eyelid above. Also, don’t point your eyelashes in, because it closes your eyes off, making it look a lot smaller.
