One tiny slit solved a surprisingly annoying problem. #tabletopgames #boardgames

One small design change completely improved the combat in my strategy board game, Pincer: A Gentleman’s War.

Originally, units were captured as soon as an opponent moved onto their tile. It was simple, but combat felt rigid and unforgiving. So I added a health system: units must now be injured by an attack before they can be captured.

That created one unexpected problem. Injured pieces are laid on their sides, but their round bases caused them to roll around the board. Rather than redesigning the pieces, I cut a small slit into each base so they stay in place.

Sometimes game design is about creating new mechanics—and sometimes it’s about cutting tiny grooves into game pieces.
