Returning home to Barbuda a year after Irma’s annihilation

Hurricane Irma devastated the Caribbean island of Barbuda in 2017. One year later evacuated residents are finally starting to move back.

“Americas Now” Correspondent Nitza Soledad Perez checked in on the islanders to see what advancements they’ve made.
Antigua and Barbuda is a Caribbean country made up of two, namesake islands and several smaller ones.

Hurricane Irma damaged or destroyed almost every structure in Barbuda in 2017. The island's entire population evacuated to neighboring Antigua.

The United Nations, private donors and the government of China decided to step in and rebuild the island. As a result, residents have returned.

Check out Nitza Soledad Perez’ report on the progress of the past year.
