Intense Geomagnetic Storm in Real Time 12 K 360 VR!!!!! (As soon as you play, look straight up!)
Just another one of my real time VR aurora videos.
Lately, I keep hearing these rumors and doomsayers saying the Earth's geomagnetic field is weakening using recent Auroral activity as evidence; they are partially right, but not insofar as this is the end of times. A brief sicience lesson to you all:
When solar particles bombard the earth with enough density, polarity, and speed, it weakens the earth's magnetic field and eventually these particles enter the upper atmosphere. The interaction of these particles with gasses in the upper atmosphere, it creates faint lights of various colors depending on what gas molecules are being excited by the solar radiation. This phenomenon is especially pronounced in the polar regions where the field is inherently weakest (and always have been), though during major geomagnetic storms, it can occur a bit further south, and when the solar wind returns to normal, usually a few hours to days later, the Earth's field immediately recovers. This has been going on for billions of years, and will continue to.
The resulting light show is known as the Aurora Borealis (northern hemisphere) or Aurora Austrailus (southern hemisphere).
Interestingly, we are frequently experiencing periods of geomagnetic weakness, which is in-turn causing alot more Auroras lately. This is becuase we are in a Solar Maximum. The Sun, you see, goes through 11 year Cycles of highs and lows with respect to sunspots, and resultant flares--we are currently in the 11 year high of these phenomenon.
That said, our technology is at risk in the case of a "Carrington Event" type of storm which last occurred in the 1859 which caused severe damage to telegraph systems, but that is a story for another time.
In this video, I did some filming out at Knik River during a G3 geomagnetic event (a pretty strong one) during April of 2023. I gave selection of the soundtrack a fair amount of time, and I think I have something that works quite well here.
Anyways, sit back, put on your VR glasses, and enjoy the light show...and remember not to buy into crazy YouTube clickbait doom and gloom psuedoscience.
Best,
-William
