It’s rare, but not unprecedented, for Apartment Therapy to meet and feature an adult who is living (and thriving!) in their childhood home. It’s, indeed, a very special story to feature. Hattie Kolp’s 1 bedroom Upper West Side apartment is nothing short of magical for the stated reason, and because it’s truly been so beautifully transformed in recent years. Hattie emphasizes that the on-going projects have been a series of restorations rather than mere renovations, always striving to bring the home's features closer to their original purpose and beauty. On her own and later with the help of her boyfriend and craftsman, Sebastian, Hattie has fully renovated the kitchen. Together they have installed marble checkerboard tile, marble counters, cabinets by deVOL and graceful open shelving to display Hattie’s lovely everyday items. In the butler’s pantry, Hattie has found the perfect shade of green by Farrow & Ball. She installed a marble counter for a tea and coffee station, and they have restored the original wood cabinetry for storage above.
The two bedroom apartment of her childhood is now a spacious 1 bedroom apartment with a generous dining room and cozy reading nook. Crown molding and picture frame molding give each room European pre-war charm. Her playful pink and purple childhood room is now warm white with bright white trim, the extra tall king-sized bed anchors the room and overlooks the suite of rooms, with a view from the foot of the bed to the living room then into the dining room, concluding with the original fireplace at the farthest end of the apartment. Every perspective is picturesque, every detail thoughtful, and every nook and cranny well known. You quickly understand why Hattie takes such joy and pride in her family’s Upper West Side home; it was a pleasure to see it for ourselves! Thanks, Hattie for the tour! We hope you enjoy.
