The Mighty Mammut | Maize harvest 2016 | Mengele Mammut 6800 & friends
Mengele forage harvesters are getting thin on the ground these days. Especially those who still fulfil a front-line duty at a busy contracting company. This Mammut 6800 was one of Mengele's landmark machines and still works a treat. It is seen cutting one of the first maize fields of the 2016 season on September 17th in the Dutch town of Winterswijk, Gelderland, near the German border. The owner is contractor Dijkman Ruurlo.
The machine is accompanied by two tractor-trailer combinations to cart the crop over a small distance to the farmers clamp. A Fendt Favorit 714 Vario and new New Holland T6.160 Blue Power are both using periodic Veenhuis silage trailers to do so. There is a little surprise waiting at the end. On the clamp we find a refurbished and pristine Fendt Favorit 610 LS pushing up and compacting the maize silage.
The Mammut 6800 was one of the most successful self propelled forage harvesters (SPFH) that Mengele from Günzburg, Germany, produced during the nineties. It was a real contractors machine and even produced for Massey Ferguson for a short period of time. The 6800 pushes out 354 HP (260 kW) from a twin-turbo Mercedes-Benz V8 14.6 litre diesel engine that has a lovely bark as it travels along the field. The machine was produced between 1994 and 1997 and this machine is fitted with a six row Kemper Champion 445 header. Under new ownership Mengele sold their forage harvester range to Case IH who developed it further. One of the last and very rare 8790 machines can be seen in this video of ours: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_9tbULxIGA. Case IH then sold the business on to Krone and the rest, as they say, is history. Mengele itself was acquired by Dutch manufacturer Lely in 2009 and the name completely disappeared altogether in 2011 after a 140 years of production!
