Is the M27 IAR a Marine Corps Infantry replacement for the M16 or the M249 SAW? Or wait...is it meant for the Designated Marksman role? Apparently It's a bunch of roles rolled into one for the Marine Corps. While the Army is still busy developing a new 6.8mm rifle with the Department of Defense it seems the Marines Corps are off being individuals again. Joking aside this rifle has some incredible capabilities compared to the M16 and M249.

The advantages to the M27 (Infantry Automatic Rifle) is that it can fire at a high rate of fire for a longer period of time than the M16. It's the future weapon system we've been waiting for. It has a short stroke piston system different than the gas system that the old M16 uses.
The M27 has a short-stroke gas piston system. It has a barrel length of 16.5 inches and it weighs 9.8 pounds when fully loaded. It fires the same 556 rounds that the M-16 shoots. It has a free-floating barrel meaning it only makes contact with the rest of the rifle at the receiver. This gives it improved accuracy and prevents the barrel from overheating quickly. It has a rate of fire of 700 rounds per minute. Its max effective range is 600 meters for a point target and 800 meters for an area target.
The rifle is full auto ,Finally we can say bye to the 3 round burst ! Why did they even have 3 round burst on the M4? It feels like a child safety lock on a car window - do you seriously not trust us enough to have full auto and we fire it in bursts? On second thought nevermind I wouldn’t trust any grunts in a room for more than ten minutes if it hasn’t been fully child proof right down to the electrical outlets.
Every one of these are outfitted with a bipod and an ACOG 4x scope. As part of the tactical changes within the Marine Corps they experimented with deploying a unit where every single. M27 was fitted with a suppressor. They reported they were able to communicate easier with a trade off of weapons over heating faster.
Honestly though, this is an amazing new platform and it has some huge advantages over the M16. H&K Developed this weapon which is also known as the HK416 when it's being used by the SOCOM units.
