5 Exercises for a Hamstring Muscle Strain

Today's video covers 5 exercises to help you recover from a hamstring muscle strain. The exercises in this video progress from less to more challenging, so it's important to start at the beginning if your injury is more acute and painful. As your symptoms improve and the injury heals, you can move to the exercises later in the video.

The hamstrings (biceps femoris, semitendinosus & semimembranosus) are located in the posterior thigh region and are responsible for extending the hip and flexing the knee when acting concentrically.

Hamstring strains commonly occur when the muscles are contracting forcefully and lengthening (eccentric contraction) such as seen in the late swing phase of sprinting. During this phase, the muscle group is maximally lengthened and working to decelerate hip flexion and knee extension in order to prepare for the next foot contact.

During the acute stages of healing, the muscles will not be able to tolerate significant load and pain will be experienced if the tension is too great. However, by gradually loading the injured muscle, you will help expedite the healing process and begin to restore tissue integrity, which will be important for reducing the risk of future injury.
