2022 Peugeot 308 revealed, Australian launch timing confirmed

Peugeot's new-generation Golf fighter will launch in early 2022 with a bold new look, advanced cabin tech and the option of hybrid power in Europe.

The 2022 Peugeot 308 has been revealed, ahead of its Australian launch in the first quarter of 2022 (January to March inclusive).
The first production vehicle to wear Peugeot's new logo, the third-generation 308 will take the fight to the Volkswagen Golf, Mazda 3, Renault Megane and other near-premium small cars with a sporty new look, high-tech cabin and a range of electrified engine options.

On the styling front, the new 308 adopts many of the design cues debuted on newer Peugeot models such as the 208 and 508, with vertical 'claw' LED daytime-running lights up front, and slim LED tail-lights integrated into a full-width black trim piece at the rear.
Styling highlights range from blistered wheel arches from and rear, a tall front grille connecting into the headlights, a hard shoulder line, radar sensors for the active driving systems integrated into the badge, and alloy wheels up to 18 inches in diameter.
Inside, an upgraded interpretation of Peugeot's i-Cockpit signature cabin layout features, with a compact steering wheel, 10-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 10-inch 3D digital instrument cluster, and a slim touchscreen below the main display providing an array of shortcuts to key vehicle functions, able to be set by the driver.
The infotainment screen features wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, satellite navigation and a new 'OK Peugeot' voice control system, along with eight profiles for different drivers and multi-connection Bluetooth.

A traditional gear selector on automatic models has been replaced by a set of PRND buttons, while other interior features include wireless smartphone charging, a 10-speaker Focal sound system, eight-colour ambient LED lighting, and a selection of USB ports.
Front passengers sit in 10-way power-adjustable massaging seats on higher grades, trimmed in Alcantara and leather with contrast stitching. There's also a new air filtration system, which prevents airborne pollutants from entering the cabin, with the system's actions displayed on the central screen.

Under the skin, the new Peugeot 308 sits on the brand's EMP2 platform – an earlier variant of which underpinned the outgoing model – and measures in at 4360mm long and 1440mm high, riding on a 2675mm wheelbase – 11mm longer overall, 20mm lower and 55mm longer in wheelbase then the model it replaces.
412 litres of boot space is on offer with the rear seats up (down 8 litres over the old 308), expanding to 1323 litres with the second row folded. An additional 34 litres of storage space can be utilised through small compartments spread around the cabin.
Headlining the range of available powertrains in Europe is a pair of plug-in hybrids, combining a small turbo petrol engine (developing either 110kW or 132kW) to an 81kW electric motor for combined outputs of 132kW and 165kW for models equipped with the low- and high-power petrol engines respectively.

Energy comes from a 12.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack, enabling electric-only ranges of Europe's WLTP test cycle of 59 to 60km, and capable of a full charge in one hour and 50 minutes on a 7.4kW AC home wallbox.
Both models are front-wheel-drive, sending drive to the tarmac via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Rumours suggest a high-performance 308 Peugeot Sport Engineered will arrive at a later date, powered by a 220kW, all-wheel-drive version of the PHEV system.
Alternatively, buyers can opt for a non-hybrid 1.2-litre turbo petrol three-cylinder, available in 81kW and 96kW states of tune. It's paired to a six-speed manual transmission as standard, with the latter, more potent 96kW option exclusively offering the option of an eight-speed automatic.

European customers can also select a 1.5-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder, routing 81kW to the front wheels through a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic.

The exact engine line-up that will be offered to Australian buyers hasn't been confirmed, however expect the 96kW petrol engine and eight-speed auto to be available across the bulk of the range, with the potential for one or both of the hybrid options on high-grade models.
Available safety features on flagship variants include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centring assist (capable of keeping the car centred around corners on motorways at speeds up to 180km/h), long-range blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, driver attention monitoring and traffic sign recognition.
