Jeremy Hunt accuses Labour of lying about ‘risk’ to pensions

Jeremy Hunt has accused Labour of lying over a claim that scrapping national insurance would put the state pension at risk.

Presenting Treasury costings of Labour policies, the chancellor insisted during a speech in Westminster on Friday that his party had been “generous” to pensioners and said Sir Keir Starmer’s plans would create a £38 billion funding gap.

Labour had claimed that abolishing national insurance would cost £48 billion and would mean that the NHS or pensions would have to be cut to afford it.

“It is a lie, I don’t make any bones about it. It is fake news, and it is an absolute disgrace to win this election by scaring pensioners about a policy that is not true,” Hunt said.

“When is comes to taxes on pensioners, I would just say to every pensioner in the country, ‘Which is the party in British politics that wants to bring down the taxes that you and everyone else pays, and which is the party that we know will increase them?’”
