Cristiano Ronaldo scores a brilliant header for Juventus to overcome Sampdoria to go top of the Serie A.

Ronaldo leapt onto the end of the left-back Alex Sandro's cross which found its way to the back post just before the half-time whistle. The forward was reported to have remained airborne for one and a half seconds, and reached a height of two and a half metres by some accounts.

He rose above the Sampdoria defender Nicola Murru, who at 25 is nearly a decade his junior, and hammered the ball into the far top-left corner of the net past Emil Audero.

Juventus manager Maurizio Sarri has expressed his awe of star forward Cristiano Ronaldo after his stunning header in the win over Sampdoria in Serie A on Wednesday.

The Portuguese netted the winner in a 2-1 triumph for the Bianconeri. The goal saw Ronaldo peel away at the back post before producing a remarkable leap and header, giving his side the lead before the interval.

Afterwards, Sarri was asked for his thoughts on the goal, noting both Ronaldo's header and Paulo Dybala's strike left him mesmerised, per Dejan Kalinic of Goal:

"When Ronaldo scored I thought the same as the Dybala one—'f--k, wow.' But wow does not describe it all. They both scored two outstanding goals.

"Ronaldo did something that you see in the NBA, he was up in the air for an hour and a half."

That was Sampdoria manager Claudio Ranieri's assessment of Cristiano Ronaldo's gravity defying leap to score in Juventus' 2-1 win against his side on Wednesday night.

The 34-year-old Portuguese produced a leap of 71cm as he met Alex Sandro's cross at the back post at a height of 8.39ft (2.56m) - higher than the crossbar (8ft) - before heading home. His waist was at the height of the defender's head.

Mick Clegg, a former strength and conditioning coach at United who worked with Ronaldo, told BBC World Service: "It doesn't surprise me that he can still jump like that at the age of 34 because of the way he works.

"To be able to leap that high you're using power which is strength and speed together. With Cristiano the emphasis has always been on speed. So as he's growing older he's actually getting stronger but he's maintaining the speed which is massively important.

"Speed comes from the brain. Everybody thinks it's going to come from the body but it's actually your brain's interaction with the body that creates the speed to be able to jump that high.

"Over the years we did plenty of box jumps, single leg box jumps and double footed box jumps, on and off, that sort of thing but it's your speed of getting your feet and your body working together as a unit that will ultimately give you that height."

The goal marked Ronaldo's 12th competitive effort for Juventus this season and his 40th from 63 competitive appearances for the Italian club. He now has 613 senior goals in total from 826 matches.
