WINTON: THE BRITISH SCHINDLER?

This video looks at the work of Sir Nicholas Winton and the British Committee for Refugees from Czechoslovakia who managed to get 664 Czech, Jewish children out of the Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia and to safety in the UK just before Britain declared war on Nazi Germany. It is a remarkable story that has a number of components – but it was a story that lay undiscovered for nearly 50 years and all because Nicholas Winton’s wife found a scrapbook in the attic of their home. The story came to the attention of the BBC and Winton was invited on to a programme called ‘That’s Life’ to discuss his role in the Czech Kinder transport – the end of the show is one of the most moving moments in British TV history. Following the revelation, Nicholas Winton was knighted in 2003 and received some of the highest Czech honours that can be conferred on a civilian. In the Czech Republic, he is a national hero and his work and story has spawned numerous articles, exhibitions, feature films and documentaries and in Prague a special memorial. But there are some who have suggested that as Winton was part of a larger organisation he didn’t deserve all the accolades. In this video, we look at how Winton got involved, what he did and whether some of the other ‘unsung’ heroes – such as Trevor Chadwick deserve more credit for their role in helping to rescue the children from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia.
