Adventures in the Peruvian Amazon Jungle, Libertad Jungle Lodge out of Iquitos, Peru

At this point we had travelled in South America for about 4 months. The non-stop backpacking-style travel was starting to wear out on us. At this point we had decided that we would leave the continent - but before doing so, we decided to pay a visit to the world-famous Amazon Jungle. The options were dizzying but we finally settled on doing a 5-day 4-night stay in Libertad Jungle Lodge, just out of Iquitos, Peru.

Before we took a boat ride to the lodge we opted to visit the world-famous Belen Markets. I thought I'd seen a lot from my time of living in Asia where they sold almost anything in wet markets (frogs, live chickens etc) - but the Belen Markets were eye-opening to say the least; with parts of cayman and turtles for sale. It made me think about my views on what was right from an ethical standpoint, but then I also thought how do we balance that with what's a cultural practice of the local people for generations?

We had some amazing experiences in the Amazon Jungle and saw heaps of animals (sloths were up there on my list!). We can never forget the sounds of the Amazon which were deafening at times it was hard to fall asleep. Mosquitoes were aplenty. --PK

NB. we visited the Amazon in May 2018, pre-COVID.
