2 Yoghurt Hacks for making cheaper, higher quality yoghurt at home
Use the Easiyo system or other basic equipment and follow these simple directions for creamier and less expensive fresh yoghurt.
1 sachet of supermarket yoghurt powder can last for many batches or you can make yoghurt without purchasing yogurt powder at all.
Yoghurt sachets contain milk powder while these hacks use heat treated whole milk which provides a much more delicious result. (You can boil and cool your own milk if desired but I prefer to skip the waiting and mess).
I also prefer to add my own natural flavour and sweetener when required.
1 batch of purchased sachet method = $3.90
vs
2nd hack method = $1 (for the long life milk)
Hack #1
Add 2 tablespoons of plain yoghurt powder. Seal and store the rest in the fridge for many more batches.
Dissolve the powder in a small amount of UHT milk.
It must be long life milk (or fresh milk that you have boiled and cooled)
Fill your container with more UHT milk, add the lid
Shake to finish mixing
Ferment in a yoghurt maker half-filled with boiling water for 8 - 12 hours.
If you don't have a yoghurt maker you can use a thermos, or slow cooker or other set-ups that will keep the yoghurt warm for several hours.
I have the batton in the easiyo maker and added boiling water until it went about halfway up the jar.
Hack #2
Use 2 tablespoons of your existing yoghurt and mix with UHT milk.
A simple and DELICIOUS vanilla yoghurt is created by adding a small amount of sugar plus vanilla bean paste.
Ferment as before until set.
Refrigerate your yoghurts when set.
