BC's NDP government spent nearly $100 million on Burnaby Hospital Phase 2 and seven care facilities, now on hold. Contracts were canceled for Burnaby Phase 2 and for care homes in Kelowna, Fort St. John, Delta, Abbotsford and Mission; the status of Squamish and Campbell River remains unclear. A Postmedia review of 2026 budget shows about $45 million on Burnaby Phase 2 and $51 million on the care homesand Abbotsford $25 million, Delta $15 million, Chilliwack $8 million, Kelowna $2 million, Campbell River $1 million. Chilliwack Mayor Ken Popove noted the land was purchased and the project is at risk. Donors have raised $319 million, but remain unsure when it will be returned. Infrastructure Minister Bowinn Ma said cost overruns and $1.8 million per bed made delivery unaffordable; she cited lower figures elsewhere, around $1.4 million per bed. Critics say the province needs a plan as demand for care grows.
