This Vaccine Could Prevent 42,000 Deaths in India

With nearly 80,000 new cases annually, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in India.

To tackle this, the Union Health Ministry is launching a nationwide HPV vaccination programme for girls aged 14 years.

💉 What vaccine will India use?

India will administer Gardasil, a quadrivalent HPV vaccine that protects against:
• Types 16 & 18 – responsible for over 80% of cervical cancer cases
• Types 6 & 11

Scientific evidence shows that even one dose provides strong protection, especially before exposure to the virus.

🏥 How will vaccination happen?

• Free and voluntary access
• Available at government health facilities
• Including Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, CHCs, District Hospitals & Medical Colleges
• Supported through partnership with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance
• Non-live vaccine with a strong global safety record
