Adobe Animate CC mask tutorial 2021

Director Artie Romero demonstrates using an Adobe Animate CC mask to make characters appear to go behind background elements. You can easily use mask layers to reveal portions of a character.

In the Animate timeline, add a layer directly above the character or item you want masked, and designate it as a mask layer. Drag the original layer up under the mask layer, so the original layer is linked (indented on the timeline). Set start and end keyframes for the mask, and draw or place a filled shape on that layer. All shapes, text, symbols and even animations will work as masks, except 3D objects and effects. The mask layer reveals the area of linked layers beneath the filled shape.

Note that both the mask layer and its linked layer must be *locked* for the mask to work.

ARG! Cartoon Animation began using Animate's predecessor Macromedia Flash in its cartoon animations in 1999. Adobe Animate cc 2021 is the studio's primary production tool, while Blender 3D is used for most backgrounds. Animate CC is one of the leading 2D animation programs in the world.
