The Hidden Beauty of Hawaii's Garden Island | Best Hiking on Kauai, Hawaii in 4K
We travel to #Kauai (Early December) which is the oldest (and wettest) island in #Hawaii. Kauai is known as the Garden Island and we visit the #Kalalau Trail, the Na Pali Coast, Waimea Canyon State Park, Polihale State Park, and the Fern Grotto.
We would have to fly to Kauai, so we started in Columbus Ohio and headed to Chicago Illinois. We had a slight delay before heading to Los Angeles. On the flight we passed over the Grand Canyon and the beautiful landscape of the US.
Because of the delay in Chicago, the last flight to Hawaii for the day had already left, so we would have to wait until tomorrow to get to Kauai. So we made the most of it and went to Venice Beach. We walked down the boardwalk, saw Muscle Beach, checked out the Ocean Front Walk.
We boarded the flight to Kauai. It's an approximately 6 hour flight to Hawaii from Los Angeles. We landed in Kauai at Lihue International Airport, rented a car, and headed into Princeville, Hawaii. We stayed the night at a hotel and prepared our equipment for backpacking the next day on the Na Pali coast. We were going to hike the Kalalau trail, one of the most famous on Hawaii.
We headed out to the trailhead of the Kalalau trail using a shuttle from Princeville. After starting on the Kalalau trail, the rain was intense and Kauai was living up to its reputation as being the wettest island. We made it to the Hanakapi'ai stream, the rain had drastically raised the water levels and the ranger closed the trail. We headed back to Princeville and planned out backup options for the rest of our trip. While eating lunch, we tried out a Maui Brewing Company beer. We checked out downtown Princeville, and then had some Poke for dinner.
The next day, we headed to Ho'opi'i Falls. These falls were featured in the movie Jurassic Park. We took a swim, and enjoyed the peaceful scenery of the Ho'opi'i Falls. Afterwards, we headed to a place we had heard about called Leong's Meathouse. Unfortunately it was closed so we ended up eating at Bubba Burgers.
The next day, we were heading to Waimea Canyon State Park. On the way, we tried local Hawaiian food, Musubi, and Saimin ramen. At Waimea Canyon State Park, we first went to the overlook to look at Waimea Canyon. We then took a trail to see Waipo'o Falls. At Waipo'o Falls, we could see Hawaiian helicopter tours flying through the canyon. We eventually hiked out from Waipo'o Falls and headed to Polihale State Park.
At Polihale State Park we were going to stay the night at Polihale Beach. On the way, there was a 3 mile unpaved road that was very rough. Once we got there, we were treated to a beautiful Hawaiian beach sunset. It wasn't long before it was dark at Polihale Beach, so we settled in for the night.
The next day we headed out and stopped at a local restaurant called Bobbie's, where we had Japanese Hawaiian fusion food including Katsu, tuna, saimin, grilled spam, tempura, and more.
The last big hike on Kauai was going to be the Sleeping Giant, also known as Nou Nou Mountain. The Sleeping Giant Mountain on Kauai is known as the sleeping giant because from a distance, it somewhat looks like a person lying on their back. We took the back entrance up the Sleeping Giant.
For our final day in Kauai, Hawaii, we had one more location to visit, and that was the Fern Grotto on the Wailua River. It was a short and beautiful boat ride to the Fern Grotto, and the Wailua River was very peaceful.
