Did you know QuickBooks is phasing out the traditional desktop license model?

We’ve used QuickBooks Desktop for years across multiple entities because it allowed us to open individual company files as needed — without paying monthly per company.

Now?

• Desktop version reportedly moving to $1,800 per year
• Previously ~$450 every few years
• Subscription model becoming unavoidable
• Payroll not even needed in our case

For multi-entity businesses, that’s a massive cost shift.

This raises bigger questions:

• Why is there so little competition in accounting software?
• Is SaaS becoming the only option everywhere?
• Are businesses getting locked into subscription ecosystems?
• What are the real alternatives?

We’ll subscribe for now — but we’re actively looking for other solutions.
