Chevy GM Engine Ticking Noise, But Gets Quiet After 30 Seconds Fix

Are you hearing a loud, rhythmic engine ticking noise from your brand-new truck or SUV? Many owners of 2025 and 2026 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Colorado, and Traverse models—as well as GMC Sierra, Canyon, Acadia, and Cadillac LSY-powered vehicles—are reporting a metallic, sewing-machine-like tapping sound coming directly from the top end of their engine. This characteristic tick is most noticeable during cold starts or at a warm idle, and the tapping speed climbs perfectly in sync with your engine RPM.

While it's easy to mistake this sound for a naturally clicky direct fuel injection system, high-pressure fuel pump, or a simple exhaust leak, General Motors just issued an updated Preliminary Information Service Bulletin (PIP6101A) confirming a major internal valvetrain defect. The root cause is microscopic manufacturing debris left behind during the production of the valve rocker arms. Over time, these fine metal shavings break loose, enter the internal engine oil passages, and lodge themselves inside the stationary hydraulic lash adjusters (SHLAs). The trapped debris stops the precision ball-check valve from sealing, causing the lifter to lose oil pressure and become completely "soft." Because the adjuster collapses instead of holding firm, a gap opens up in the valvetrain, forcing the rocker arm to slam violently into the top of the adjuster on every single cam rotation.

If you suspect your 2.7L L3B, 2.5L LK0, or 2.0L LSY engine has this issue, a standard code reader won't help because this mechanical failure rarely triggers a Check Engine Light immediately. Dealership technicians must use a mechanical stethoscope to isolate the noise, remove the valve cover, and perform a physical "squish test" by pressing down on each rocker arm. GM's official fix requires a total replacement of all 16 hydraulic lash adjusters and all 16 rocker arms to completely purge the metal debris from the system. Fortunately, these vehicles are still covered under the factory 5-year/60,000-mile GM powertrain warranty, but ignoring this critical symptom can eventually ruin your camshaft.
